RAINBOW CLOUD STORY: Shannon shares her story!

Hey there everyone! My name is Shannon Jackson.

I want to share with everyone a small story of how I overcame a very difficult situation at a young age. I was both shocked and honored when I was approached to share my story with you all.

By the time I was eight years old I had gone to two different schools, I started out in a public school, and then for two years, I went to a private school. Upon returning to back public school they discovered through testing that I was in fact below the grade level in two subjects but especially math. This led to me being tested every year in school since that discovery was made; I was pulled out of classrooms and had to take exams with one teacher and allowed extra test time. They weren’t sure if I had a learning disability or if I just fell behind in the school system. I felt extremely insignificant when compared to other kids, I felt like something was wrong with me. In a school where I was one of few minorities, plus I didn’t feel on the same level as other kids, the school was a reminder that I was different. Fitting in for a child or being accepted for who they are is everything.

I always knew as a kid that I wanted to work in healthcare. Having two older grandparents in my life and helping them out at church, I just loved people, and taking care of them was the only thing I felt like I would enjoy doing. But I wasn’t sure if this was actually possible. But I thought to myself, if you want to be a nurse go for it, don’t let your own negative thoughts keep you from reaching your goals. WITH FAITH ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

We each have moments in our life where we have to let go of the things that are holding us back from accomplishing our dreams, but in order to do that, we sometimes must overcome our fears of not being good enough. It’s so easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing, and comparing ourselves to others, but we all have our unique strengths and talents. Without them, we wouldn’t be who we are.

Now I can officially say I will be RN in 6 short months, I will have a career I dreamed about for many days through my journey thus far. Getting through nursing school was one of the toughest things I’ve done. For anyone reading this please never give up on your dreams, talents, or anything in life that will make you happy. Nothing worth having will come easy, and many days it will feel impossible. Be your biggest cheerleader! Be kind to yourself, and put good energy around you. We are all humans trying to get through this thing called life you may as well love what you do, and love yourself in the process.
